TRANSCONTINENTAL BEGINS 2008 WITH BIODEGRADABLE PUBLI-SAC
Transcontinental announced it has chosen an Environmental Products
Inc. (EPI) certified biodegradable plastic bag for its Publi-Sac,
used to distribute marketing material door-to-door to households
in eastern Ontario and Quebec. The plastic is engineered to
degrade and totally fragment in 90 to 120 days and to biodegrade
in a further 12 to 24 months after disposal. Already reusable and
recyclable, it will also be biodegradable in early 2008.
Other recent sustainable
development initiatives by Transcontinental, include the
implementation of a Paper Purchasing Policy, that promotes the use
of environmentally preferable papers through a classification
process that allows their clients to make an informed choice
regarding the paper they choose for their printing and publishing
needs. The policy promotes the use of paper with maximized
post-consumer and de-inked recycled fibre and it encourages the
use of paper made with pre-consumer recovered fibre or alternative
fibres in preference to virgin wood fibre. Learn more:

mailing lists for publishers, are reminded that as of January 14,
2008, customers will have two options:

Option 2: Mailers can receive
the entire returned mail piece. In this case, the customer will be
invoiced a $1.00 processing fee plus applicable postage for each
returned item. (For example, a 250g undeliverable Publications
Mail item return postage would be $2.65 in addition to the $1.00
uPM processing fee.
SAFE RURAL DELIVERY
Several members have inquired about the impact of the safety
issues for Canada Post delivery personnel in rural areas, and
if/when any delivery changes will impact their address records.
Long lead times and a solid understanding of the work schedule by
geographic area and timing horizon(s) for changes are typically
needed for address management initiatives. In early 2008, Chapter
Directors will call for an update on their Chapter meeting agendas
to bring this information in to a collaborative forum. In simple
terms, two kinds of hazards have been identified: traffic safety
relating to the danger of other vehicles on the road present to
Canada Post; and, ergonomics, resulting from repeated stretching
to deposit mail in rural mailboxes. Two links are provided here
for background:
