MINISTER TABLES AMENDMENT
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, and Minister Responsible for Canada
Post Corporation, has tabled a key amendment to the Canada Post
Corporation Act that would permit “letter exporters” to collect
letters in Canada for transmittal and delivery outside of Canada.
The proposed amendment to the Canada Post Corporation Act adds an
exception to Canada Post’s exclusive privilege under Section 15 for
letters intended for an addressee outside Canada.

NO DEAL WITH GLOBEL DIRECT
According to a report published in The Gazette (See Business, B-8,
October 16) Montreal-based, Komunik Corp. will not proceed with the
acquisition of Globel Direct, announced September 7th. The deal with
Calgary-based Globel Direct had been expected to expand Komunik’s
national reach. No reason was given for the change in plan.
FOREST INDUSTRY AIMS TO BE FIRST CARBON-NEUTRAL SECTOR
The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) announced that
Canada’s forest products industry is setting a new bar for
environmental responsibility and action on climate change:
industry-wide carbon neutrality by 2015 without the purchase of
carbon offset credits. A partnership with WWF-Canada will inform and
help guide the initiative. The announcement was made October 30 at
the second annual Business of Climate Change Conference in Ottawa.
FPAC President and CEO, Avrim Lazar, noted great pride in “our
record of reducing emissions within our own operations, we are
committed to going further and we encourage others to also
voluntarily embrace stretch targets.” Lazar concluded: “As a next
step, by working with suppliers, customers and other stakeholders
across our value chain, we hope to not only minimize our own carbon
profile but also to provide our customers with the information and
products they need to meet their own climate change objectives.”
