STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF A GIANT IN DIRECT MARKETING
The Dave Taylor Award for Copywriting Excellence will be a new jewel in the crown of the 2007 NAMMU Awards. In its fifth year, the NAMMU Awards annually celebrate excellence in marketing through the mail medium. Tony Keenan, Chairman SBS Sears Business Solutions, NAMMU head judge emeritus, said “This is a great opportunity for a copywriter to shine and stand on the shoulders of a giant in Canadian Direct Marketing. I know Dave would be very pleased.” The inaugural award will be presented to the first winner by one of the many copywriters mentored by Dave Taylor, at the awards event on November 7 at the Design Exchange.

SUPREMEX ACQUIRES NPG ENVELOPE
Following the issuance by the Competition Bureau of Canada of a letter expressing their view that grounds do not exist to initiate proceedings before the Competition Tribunal with respect to the transaction, Supremex recently announced it has entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement by which Supremex Inc. will acquire substantially all the assets of NPG envelope of Hamilton, Ontario. NPG is the second largest envelope manufacturer in Canada with approximately $26 million in revenues, owned and managed by the Holton family since its foundation in 1913. NPG operates in Hamilton and Winnipeg with a staff of 150 employees. The completion of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions.

CANADIAN PAYMENT ASSOCIATION CPA) UPDATES
Changes have been proposed by CPA to its rule on Pre-Authorized Debits (Rule H1) and comments are invited. The new elements of the framework developed in consultation with member financial institutions and stakeholders focus on three areas:

Reflecting an evolving marketplace and technological advancements

Enhancing consumer protection and convenience
bullet
Improving processes & operational efficiency
 
Key proposals include:

Establishing certain mandatory requirements for the
forms used to obtain customers’ authorization
bullet
Adopting a new, more flexible framework to support electronic
processes for obtaining customers’ authorization

TRANSCONTINENTAL LAUNCHES CUSTOM PUBLISHING AGENCY
Transcontinental Media recently announced the launch of Transcontinental Custom Communications, a joint venture with UK agency Seven Squared, to provide custom publishing services to clients in Canada and the United States. Custom publishing involves strategic and creative services that achieve a company’s marketing objectives by delivering unique, branded content to customers using print or digital channels. In addition to the expertise from Seven Squared, recognized as one of the UK’s most successful publishing agencies, Transcontinental Custom Communications will offer fully integrated relationship marketing services that include database marketing, research, variable printing, photo studio and premedia tools. Nino Di Cara from Seven Squared’s operation in London, England, will manage the Toronto-based operation as Director, Custom Publishing.
