NAMMU JOINS STEERING COMMITTEE
Following the first meeting
of the NAMMU Publications Mail Council, Dale Bemben, Product
Manager, Publications Mail, invited NAMMU representation on the
publishing industry joint workteam steering committee. This
small group represents the industry interests and works with
Dale on strategic direction, key issue identification and
proposed solutions. Ernest Judd (Quebecor World) will
participate on behalf of NAMMU, with Jim Wiseman (RBW Owen Sound
– Transcontinental) acting as alternate. According to NAMMU
President, Kathleen Rowe : “We are delighted with the invitation
from Dale to participate in these important sessions and
grateful that Ernie and Jim have agreed to participate. Given
their level of professionalism and knowledge, NAMMU will
definitely be adding significant value.”
The
NAMMU Publications Mail Council represents every component in
the publishing chain and as such, can evaluate and easily model
solutions, as well as provide impact assessment on each
publishing activity for any given proposal. Registration is
underway for the next Council meeting, April 27, 10:00AM –
1:00PM, Transcontinental (Brampton).

POLICY FRAMEWORK KEY TO MAILING INDUSTRY FUTURE
The recently released
Canada Post 2004 annual report holds no major surprises for
NAMMU members and the mailing community: Lettermail volumes are
steady, Addressed Admail is growing at a very slow pace,
warnings of “future” Lettermail erosion abound, as they have for
countless years. In fact, this report further substantiates the
need for stakeholder input to the Canada Post Policy Framework,
in order to bring the reality of win-win market opportunities
identified in the NAMMU Phase 1 Report to profitable fruition.
The yet to be released Policy Framework (revised) which drives
the strategic direction of Canada Post, holds the key to the
Canadian mailing industry’s future. In a media release April 13,
NAMMU advised the issues raised and the impact of industry
recommendations made in the NAMMU report, thoroughly supported
by subsequent CPC independent workshops, need to be addressed
and implemented in the forward thinking of the Corporation. READ

SMARTMOVES
The 2004 acquisition of
SmartMoves by Canada Post provides an important opportunity to
grow its business by leveraging the magazine and and its high
traffic website for the provision of other services. Both
SmartMoves assets physically and electronically provide
information and tips to consumers on moving, as well as deliver
a mechanism to distribute Canada Post’s COA (Change of Address)
form. The services and advertising offered by SmartMoves will be
consolidated with Canada Post’s recently launched “online
Authentication” and electronic COA services when the
fully-featured, multi-media online “Movers Portal” is launched
this year. This integration creates a robust portal that
provides consumers with one-stop shopping for their move
requirements. It also provides a multi-channel media for
customer advertising campaigns.
JOINT TECHNICAL COMMITTEE – MIA
Many would think that a not
so smart move is the inertia surrounding the re-start of the
Joint Technical (JTC), for nineteen years, the only constant and
(usually) effective consultation forum of Canada Post and the
mailing industry. No meetings are scheduled, no notes issued
from the last session, no word as to how and when Canada Post
will re-engage in areas of common interest. Significant
accomplishments in technical spheres occurred frequently
throughout the various incarnations of the JTC, and at minimum,
impact assessment could be made on Canada Post planned as well
as “in progress” initiatives while the JTC was holding regularly
scheduled sessions. NAMMU intends to re-surface the topic of the
JTC with the new President, Moya Greene, once her appointment
has been confirmed, as part of the mailing industry issues
briefing.
TIME HONORS BRUNO
For most mailing industry
colleagues in the Toronto and International areas, the name
Bruno is synomymous with a positive, “can do”, attitude and
effective team work. Many don’t even know his last name –
Iannicca – he is simply Bruno, or Bruno from Gateway.
TIME WARNER recently honored Bruno with its “Circle of
Excellence” award, given each year to an outstanding individual
from one of TIME’s several hundred representatives. According to
Barry Elliott (TIME Customer Service) “Where other people see
problems, Bruno sees opportunities.” PERFORMANCE March/April
2005.
