STRIKE BACK AGAINST FRAUD
March is fraud prevention month and Canada’s federal, provincial and
territorial privacy guardians and law enforcement groups are joining
together in their respective roles to call for renewed efforts in the
fight against frauds such as identity theft. Privacy Commissioner,
Jennifer Stoddart, noted: “The theft of someone’s identity may be the
ultimate invasion of privacy.” She commented that law enforcement
agencies, governments and all organizations that collect and use
personal information must all contribute to the search for identity
theft solutions. “Whether it’s Internet or mail fraud, deceptive
telemarketing or identity theft, fraud is a serious problem.” said
Competition Commissioner, Sheridan Scott. Raf Souccar, RCMP Assistant
Commissioner commented: “We also know that education just might be our
single, strongest weapon against fraud.”
The Fraud Prevention Forum, which is
chaired by the Competition Bureau, is a concerned group of private
sector firms, consumer and volunteer groups, and government and law
enforcement agencies, committed to fighting fraud aimed at consumers
and businesses. Throughout fraud prevention month, Forum members will
participate in a number of activities across the country, including
Scam-Jams, anti-fraud events hosted by Better Business Bureaus, and
