BC Municipalities Adopt Electronic Voting

In support of the 2008 municipal election, the cities of Abbotsford, Coquitlam and Victoria introduced innovative electronic enhancements to improve and streamline the election process. The service was offered by DataFix, Canada’s leading provider of municipal election solutions.

These enhancements include:

Voter List Management

The preliminary elector list from Elections BC was loaded into VoterView, a Web-based application containing cleansing tools to help correct invalid mailing addresses and to identify duplicate electors

Voter Notification Cards

From the cleansed list, voter card packages were mailed to each household in the municipality. These packages contained a card for each eligible elector within the household. Each card advised the elector of all relevant information about the election such as where and when to vote. The card also contained a unique barcode to facilitate electronic voter strike-off.

Internet Voter Lookup

This service allowed electors to log on to the municipalities’ Web Site to find out if they were on the list. If they were not on the list, the elector was provided the information necessary to get on the list.

Electronic Voter Strike-off

Through the use of rented laptop computers and barcode scanners, polling staff were able to scan the barcode on the Voter Notification Cards that automatically crossed the electors name off the voters’ list. This function also allowed electors the option to vote anywhere in the municipality.
